A Deadly Combination, By Roger Behra

SHORT COMMUNICATION 358

A Deadly Combination

By

Roger Behra

It is a well-known fact that bullying is a serious problem on most junior high and high school campuses in America. Most of the time, it is just verbal harassment on a consistent basis. Sometimes it gets physical off the school grounds. That is where it can get out of control. It used to be only boys bullying boys. Now it includes girls bullying girls. Once in a while a boy will bully a girl. Bullying sometimes causes parents to get involved. One father even went to the bully’s house beat up the bully. Of course the father ended up being arrested.

Now there is a new chapter being added to the bullying syndrome. It is a very, very serious new problem being added to an old serious problem: It is called CYBERBULLYING." It's a weapon of great publication to a great audience instantly and anonymously." It's bullying with smartphones, and the percentage of teen-agers who have experienced it went from 6 percent in the year 2000 to 72 percent in 2008. Now, in 2013 the percentage is over 85 percent. It is a very potent and devastating form of bullying that is very frequently used, and it leads to tragic suicide consequences, especially among teenage girls: Hope Witsell, Amanda Todd, Rehtaeh Parsons, and Audrie Pott. Many suicide attempts that are made fail.

Hope Witsell made the mistake of texting a boy she liked a picture of her bare breasts.  A rival girl got ahold of the photo and texted it around school. It went viral almost instantly. After enduring, taunts in person and electronically, she finally hanged herself. Amanda Todd killed herself that followed the electronic showing of a photo of her breasts. Rehtaeh Parsons hanged herself after one of four boys accused of raping her distributed a photo of her having sex. Audrei Pott was assaulted at a party and photos of her nude body that was all decorated were distributed electronically. She suffered great harassment and humiliation from that cyberbullying. Eight days later after she got home she quickly went into the bathroom and hanged herself to her mother's great shock and dismay.

The list of lives lost through suicide figures to grow longer because of smartphone texting and the increasing culture of the callousness that people display when they talk electronically and anonymously instead of in person. Texting gets overlooked when talk is about cyberbullying and that is a mistake. It's proven that texting can go viral instantly, faster than ever before, photo and all, and also anonymously. Girls in their mid-teens most likely will commit suicide.

Two of the four girls mentioned above who committed suicide received an overwhelming lack of support from their friends. In fact the girls were instead blamed for what happened to them. That blame along with the suffering and humiliation they endured was the last they could take. Now, their lives and destinies have been wasted and only their names are part of America’s history outside of their families, who will grieve forever and never forget what could have been. Only God, our loving Lord and Savior know for sure.

Bully To Buddy, By Roger Behra

SHORT COMMUNICATION 345

Bully To Buddy

By

Roger Behra

Finally, something good is happening in one of America's Public Schools: It's Marina High School at Huntington Beach, California. The Huntington Beach Youth Board along with Councilman Joe Carchio are organizing students to sign pledges to end a very serious problem: It's the effect of student bullying. They handed out T-shirts if they signed a pledge to "Be a Buddy, not a Bully." Nearly 600 students signed pledges and received a T-shirt. That's remarkable.

Bullying takes place during class sessions and after school off school grounds. Sometimes it gets physical and parents have to get involved.

Bullying takes place when students continuously make remarks when they feel he/she is not the same as them or a little bit strange. It is present in elementary and high schools throughout America, and it is an enormous problem and especially in the state of California.

Here is how bullying works during class sessions. Several classmates get together and choose a student to bully.  Jane Sadone is chosen.  In math class the bullies keep reminding Jane that she is fat. In English class another group of bullies keep telling Jane she looks awful in her clothes. In social studies class a student laughs and says her hair is ugly. This goes on for days at a time. Most days Jane goes home crying alone. She hates to leave for school and her mother wonders what is going on. That's when parents get involved.

Bullying is common after school. The bully group taunts someone daily on the way home. When the bullied person gets fed up, it leads to fighting. Girls are as bad as boys. Some time ago a father went over to a bully's house and shot the bully.

A very special type of bullying is taking place now, and it involves a large number of bullies: It's called cyberbullying. It's devastating! It's occurring very frequently. It's used anonymously. Bullying students use FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM accounts. If a bullied person's picture is put online, it's called "put on blast." When you are put on blast and your picture is up, bullies are calling you names and saying other unkind things: That is very hurtful and demoralizing to the one bullied, and it can lead to devastating behavior like the shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Bullying is blamed for that. Adam Lanza´s picture: caused horrendous bullying because he was very different and strange looking.

America's Public Schools have so many others built in problems for one reason or another. When bullying came along on a large scale of deviant behavior, it became the icing on the problem cake. Let's hope the Be a Buddy, Not a Bully program becomes very effective in California and expands throughout other states in the culture of America. The program needs to gain momentum ASAP.

Bullying’s New Dimension

SHORT COMMUNICATION 315

Bullying’s New Dimension

By

Roger Behra

Bullying among elementary and high school boys has been normal behavior since the classroom situation came into existence. It has always been part of the philosophy in America´s schools that “boys will be boys”. Bullying, however, has become quite widespread during the past decade and recently has taken a new twist: boys are now bullying girls and girls are now bullying girls. And these new types of bullying mean business.

Among the boys bullying girls it has gotten quite vicious. Some of the bullying between them takes place on the school grounds, but that leads to trouble for the bullies. That has forced the boy bullying the girl to take place mostly off the school grounds where anything goes. In early February, 2012 some boys began bullying a small group of girls. One boy forced a girl up against the side of a car. He pinned her there, unzipped her jeans so the jeans would fall to the ground, which to everyone. The girl screamed very loudly and kept it up until a car stopped and collared the boy bully until he was arrested. Boy bullying girl can became very serious at any time.

Also in February of 2012 an after school bully session away from the school area took a very tragic turn. Two young girls got into a bully fight over a boy. It was not a ferocious battle, but one girl was slapped hard to the side of her head, and later the same night she developed a very bad headache, got very sick, and died. That led to a very serious investigation.

Parents are also victims of bullying. Their son or daughter can be doing the bullying. Their son opr daughter can be bullied anywhere at anytime. Or day can take matters into their own hands like one father did. He went to the house of the boy who was bulling his son. That led to a physical altercation between father and bully, the arrest of the father, and legal action in the father´s future.

Parents are very worried now that their children are not safe away from home on school days. It is a genuine and justified worry every school day. Since bullying starts with the bullies it can only end when they stop it. But that does not seem very likely. It is too much a part of America´s school day culture among the teenage group in the schools. It is extremely sad any kind of bullying goes on. It is emotionally destructive. It is physically harmful. It´s a great worry for the school officials and parents. And in the long run it is just another huge cultural black eye that American´s have to face every school year.

Self-Defense Is Needed

SHORT COMMUNICATION 292

Self-Defense Is Needed

By

Roger Behra

Very often something happens that brings home the fact that American´s school systems are in very dysfunctional condition. It´s a fact that the stranglehold of union influence and control in Sacramento, California, especially, has done irreparable conditions to school over a long period of time, and the newly elected Governor Brown´s decisions are not helping at all. To take matters worse, there is a great and separate worse problem that daily plagues American´s schools: School bullies.

Bullying is a self-inflicted problem because it has nothing to do with school officials. Never-the-less it affects the school day in many schools. It is strictly caused by the school-age children themselves off school property, although it has an effect on the school environment and student achievement.

Bullying directly does harm to the bullied student. Frequently the bullied student is physically harm along with psychological harm and intense dislike for school. It is hard for the bullied student to again adjust to the responsibility of everyday school life.

The National Education Association (NEA) estimates that 25% of American´s school-age children are bullied and 160, 000 suffer the devastation of the reality of bullying: They refuse to go to school due to the fear or being bullied. The 25% of bullied students is 15% of the kids enrolled in American´s schools.

Bullying, apart from directly harming the students, causes an added problem: Their parents becomes directly involved and become emotionally affected. When the bullied student´s father knows the bullying student out could, a legal problem is put into effect. Not a single useful purpose results from bulling in the short-run. The answer is maybe yes in the long-run if the bully faces justice for bad behavior.

Bullying has it´s warning signs and parents should be aware of them. Some of the most important indicators are: The child comes home with torn, damaged clothing, books, or other belongings; has unexplained cuts, bruises and scratches; has few or no friends; dislikes going to school; changes route to and from school; lost interest schoolwork; is doing poorly in school; sad, moody, depressed, teary eyes when he or she comes home; complains of physical problems; has trouble sleeping, bad dreams; loss of appetite; anxious and suffers from low self-esteem.

If you notice any of the warning signs, contact your child´s school. Obtain information from the child and school. Take quick action. Bullying can have very serious effects on children and even require legal action. These are methods of self-defense that reap very good results if you get quickly and properly involved. Your child´s present and future are at stake.

Acoso en Universidades: Bullying & Mobbing

Acoso en Universidades: Bullying & Mobbing

Por

Angel R. Cepeda Dovala
